The Coastal Bank’s history has been defined by strategic growth and a strong commitment to the community. Originally founded in Hinesville, Georgia in 1954, The Coastal Bank became a state chartered bank in 1970. In 1982, Coastal Bankshares, Inc. was formed as a single bank holding company. 
The bank acquired the Southern Bank and Trust Company of Savannah in 1986, marking its first entry into the fast-growing Savannah market. Over the next 20 years, the bank grew to more than $455 million in assets. Additionally, in 1999, it moved its headquarters to Savannah’s banking center on Johnson Square. 
Georgia banking veteran J. Thomas Wiley, Jr. joined The Coastal Bank as President and CEO in 2007, hiring an accomplished management team with extensive expertise.  Under Wiley’s leadership, the bank acquired two BankSouth offices in Savannah in 2008, expanding its core banking strategy and its footprint in coastal Georgia. Between 2007 and 2008, the FDIC market share report ranked The Coastal Bank #1 in Market Share Growth in Chatham County. 
In 2012, banking industry veteran and former Coastal Bank Chief Banking Officer James A. LaHaise was named the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Coastal Bank.  Thanks to his guidance, the bank continues to be one of the most stable and secure financial institutions in the region.
